The United States was (and is) full of sundown towns - places where black travellers weren't safe at night. If you wanted to navigate where to eat or stop as a motorist you used the Green Book. Started by Victor Green, a mailman from Harlem, he used an informal network of other letter carriers to find black owned businesses willing to list in the book. It was published for 30 years until 1966.
Presented here is an interpretation of the 1956 cover, a visible reminder of threats we still face, and the ingenuity that helped us and all marginalized people survive.
